Subscriber First Name, Free Trees are Coming!

This fall, TreesMedford is again providing free trees for the hottest areas of Medford.

You are eligible if:

You will water your tree regularly (at least 12 gallons/week during the growing season).
If you are a renter, you have permission from your landlord to plant a tree.
You live in one of Medford’s heat island neighborhoods: South Medford, Glenwood, Hillside, Wellington, or south of Salem St or the Mystic River.
You want a tree for your yard and not the city-managed grass strip by the road.

TreesMedford provides native trees of varying sizes and shapes so you can select the right tree for your yard. The deadline for signing up is September 5th. The trees generally arrive at the end of October. Click below if you want a tree. Spread the word!

TreesMedford is looking for people who received one of our trees and are willing to contribute a picture and a quote about your new tree. You might mention why you planted it, and how much it has grown (especially those who planted their trees last year). It will help us to expand the number of new trees in Medford. Use our new tree status form to contribute your testimonial.

What Grows Trees? Generosity.

TreesMedford would again like to raise funds to give away trees to cool off Medford neighborhoods. Our fellow Medford resident Tom Lincoln has offered a challenge grant this summer that will match donations one for one up to $6,000 and 2 for 1 from $6,000-$7,000. Please consider making a donation below. If you wish to use a donor advised fund please use the address information following. You may send us a check at 54 Canal St., Medford, MA 02155. The deadline for funds to be matched is September 30. Please be generous.

Significant tree program

TreesMedford would like to identify the largest and most significant trees within city limits in order to celebrate them and track their health and progress over time.

We invite Medford residents to identify and publicize distinctive trees in their neighborhoods and parks. Trees can be distinctive because of their size, age, documented history or unusual species. Trees can be on public streets, parks and the grounds of public buildings. If the tree grows on private property the owner will have to give permission before we can publicize it. Please send us a photo if you can!

New Mini-Forest Project Web Page and Blog!

We’re excited to announce a new web page and blog dedicated to TreesMedford’s Mini-Forest Project, where you can follow updates on our efforts to create small, densely planted patches of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants in Medford. The page will share progress on site selection, plant sourcing, community engagement, and our focus on priority neighborhoods like South Medford, Wellington, and Glenwood—areas identified as urban heat islands and environmental justice communities. Update on tree ordinances

The City Council recently approved the Tree Committee ordinance for its first reading. We look forward to the group being in place by the winter. The Council plans to review the Public Tree ordinance in the fall. The Private Tree ordinance is awaiting revision; TreesMedford has proposed revisions to the residential zoning proposals now being considered that would address protecting private trees in the absence of an ordinance.

There is nothing sadder than an empty watering bag on a hot day. Please water your young trees and, if you are willing, click here and volunteer to adopt a thirsty city tree.
